tshe tshe took us around and gave us the history of the dzong, built in the 1600's. the fortresses act as both the center for the government activities in the area, as well as house the monks and center of religious practices. this dzong has two large towers that have temples inside, and three courtyards. all the walls and doors are painted and ornamented in a way very unique to Bhutan. dragons and spiritual insignia (animals, symbols, patterns, etc) are everywhere. each wall seems to tell a story.
the monks had all assembled in the back courtyard, waiting for the head abbot to come and lead religious ceremonies in the main temple. we waited as they all filed in.
because of the special occasion, outsiders were not allowed inside the temples that day, and no pictures are allowed of the relics or inside temples to protect their sacred nature.
it was really amazing to witness the special day at the dzong.
